PolyGram's Bechet sampler on CD catches him at the start of the final triumphant decade of his life, when he became a transplanted Parisian hero, and indeed, he sounds positively ebullient in a series of trad jazz sessions with various European groups. But this CD is something of a cheat because nine of the 23 tracks don't include Bechet at all; hence the "Sidney Bechet and Friends" disclaimer.

Thirteen additional Bechet compositions recorded by the saxophonist during the same period fill in CD1. CD2 presents the long unavailable LP Bravo! (Vogue aka Parisian Encounter), one of Bechet’s very last studio dates, and the album Rendez-Vous avec Sidney Bechet .

This collection of Bechet tracks cut between 19would be worth owning if for nothing else than the inclusion of his one-man-band recording of "Sheik of Araby," the first known instance of overdubbing with Sidney playing clarinet, tenor sax, piano, bass and drums. But everything on here is fine, spirited New Orleans music, played with verve and wild energy.
