Really fantastic early work from guitar genius Wes Montgomery – a series of live recordings from his Indianapolis roots – done at a level that's quite different than his bigger records of the 60s! Even at this early age, Wes is already a chromatic master – able to get sounds out of his guitar that are so different than most of his contemporaries – playing in a small combo mode on most.

For nearly the last time in his career, Montgomery got a chance to stretch out with a very complementary trio (pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb) and he really digs into the nine standards (which include his "Four on Six"). This record stands as proof that Wes Montgomery never did decline as a jazz improviser even while his recordings became much more pop-oriented.9/

This was Montgomery's only European tour and this official recording will make a great addition to anyone's Wes Montgomery collection. Tunes like "Four On Six", "Impressions", and "Here's That Rainy Day" prove that Montgomery hadn't lost his chops as far as straight ahead jazz, even though he was releasing albums that were heavily arranged with strings on the Verve label/5(61).
